The United States reimposed stiff economic sanctions on Iran on Monday, renewing pressure on the Islamic Republic despite statements of doubt from European allies, three months after President Donald Trump pulled the USA out of the worldwide accord originally brokered by Barack Obama.

An executive order by President Donald Trump reimposed the sanctions on financial transactions that involve US dollars, Iran's automotive sector, the purchase of commercial planes and metals including gold.

Heavier US sanctions, aimed at Iran's oil sector, are due in November.

Renewed US sanctions on Iran have come into effect, adding to pressure on the Islamic Republic's economy and leadership, despite dismay from Washington's European allies.

European Union foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini and the French, German and British foreign ministers said they deeply regretted Trump's action.

The US today reimposed extraterritorial sanctions on Iran, meaning that foreign companies that do not comply with them could be fined or face being cut-off from the US market.

"The chilling effect of these sanctions has already taken its toll on the Iranian economy, so the sky will not fall at midnight tonight", he told The National.

"We've seen company after company announce that they are getting out of Iran", the officials said.

"They've got to behave like a normal country".

Gates says the goal of the fraud was to lower Manafort's tax bill and allow him to defer payment on the income until later years. Prosecutor Greg Andres asked Gates if he conducted criminal activity with Manafort and if he had committed crimes with Manafort.

In Washington, senior administration officials said that while critics of Trump's withdrawal from the Iran pact predicted that the threat of unilateral sanctions reimposed by the United States would be ineffective, the reality has shown the opposite.

"Consistent with President Trump's decision, the administration will be reimposing specified sanctions after August 6, the final day of the 90-day wind-down period", the White House said.

He dismissed a U.S. call for talks, saying "we are always in favour of diplomacy and talks..."

A United States official said Monday that "nearly 100 worldwide firms have announced their intent to leave the Iranian market".

The impact of the return of sanctions has ramped up tension inside Iran, which has seen days of protests and strikes in multiple towns and cities over water shortages, high prices and wider anger at the political system. "That's the ask", said Pompeo on Sunday ahead of the re-imposition.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the sanctions symbolize "the determination to block Iran's regional aggression as well as its continuous plans to arm itself with nuclear weapons".

The new USA sanctions will likely slash oil supply.

He added, "To this day, Iran threatens the United States and our allies, undermines the worldwide financial system, and supports terrorism and militant proxies around the world".

Trump's withdrawal from the agreement in May has infuriated European partners who were determined to keep it alive and now find their businesses operating in Iran faced with the threat of U.S. legal penalties.
