The quake struck as evening prayers were being said across the Muslim-majority island and there are fears that one collapsed mosque in north Lombok had been filled with worshippers.

A strong quake with a magnitude of 6.2 hit the Indonesian island of Lombok island on Thursday, causing some buildings to collapse, according to witnesses and the Southeast Asian nation's meteorology and geophysics agency.

Officials said the quake's epicentre was on land and so there was no risk of a tsunami. It also reported a 5.4-magnitude quake at 2.21am on Tuesday, close to the site of Sunday's 6.9-magnitude quake.

It's the third big quake to hit Lombok in little over a week.

The latest quake was felt strongly on the island and followed a 7.0 magnitude quake on Sunday that killed at least 131 people.

The official death toll stands at 131, but local media are reporting figures as high as 347.

Almost 2,500 people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries and upwards of 156,000 people are displaced due to the extensive damage to homes.

Aid began reaching isolated areas of the Indonesian island struggling after a powerful natural disaster that killed more than 130 people as rescuers intensified efforts Wednesday to find those buried in the rubble.

Many frightened villagers are staying under tents or tarpaulins dotted along roads or in parched rice fields, and makeshift medical facilities have been set up to treat the injured.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement the information from the other government bodies remained unconfirmed.

He also says they're continuing to look for people with untreated injuries.

Hundreds of bloodied and bandaged victims have been treated outside damaged hospitals in the island's main city of Mataram and other badly affected areas.

Some villages had "completely collapsed", said a Red Cross official in Lombok, Christopher Rassi.

Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is regularly hit by earthquakes.
