Palestinian reports said the two were killed when IDF artillery struck a graduation ceremony of al-Qassam members at a Hamas base Askelan, northern Gaza, where senior Hamas figures were in attendance.

"I am deeply alarmed by the recent escalation of violence between Gaza and Israel, and particularly by today's multiple rockets fired toward communities in southern Israel", said U.N. Middle East envoy Nickolay Mladenov in an overnight statement.

At least two hit the Israeli town of Sderot, near Gaza's northern border, police and the army said.

Enas Khammash, 23, and her 18-month daughter Bayan were killed in an airstrike in Jafarawi in central Gaza, the health ministry in the Hamas-controlled strip said, while her husband was injured.

The rocket fire also comes as a senior Hamas official said United Nations and Egyptian mediated ceasefire talks between the terror group and Israel have reached "advanced stages" and a deal was expected to be signed soon.

Footage of the attack shows the rocket impacted near a playground packed with dozens of children and there are reports that there was not enough room in bomb shelters.

A statement from the military wing of Hamas, the group that runs Gaza, claimed responsibility for the rockets.

Over 70 rockets were fired towards Israel from Gaza on Wednesday, eleven of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, the Israeli military said, announcing retaliatory strikes against Hamas targets.

The Swedish vessel, named "Freedom for Gaza", was intercepted on August 4th and taken to Israel's port Ashdod its organizers said - the second such boat of the "Freedom Flotilla" prevented from reaching Gaza.

Yesterday, an IDF tank shelled a Hamas observation post along the Gaza border, which killed two terrorists, after an attack by Hamas snipers.

Jamie McGoldrick, the United Nations' humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories, in a news release called Israel's restriction of fuel imports "a unsafe practice, with grave consequences on the rights of people in Gaza".

More than 160 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since the Great March of Return protests were launched at the end of March.

The last war in 2014 ended with a tense ceasefire and analysts say another round of conflict remains likely.
