"We look back at the past only so that we don't repeat it in the future and that's incumbent on all of us", said Herbert Rothschild, planning committee chair. For the vote of the treaty text, 122 nations voted in favor while 69 nations chose not to vote - all of which were nuclear weapon states.

On July 7, 2017 the United Nations adopted the first legally binding worldwide agreement to prohibit nuclear weapons titled the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

This year's anniversary comes eight months after the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) received the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. Tokyo is under the protection of the U.S.'s so-called "nuclear umbrella" and is not a signatory of Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

But as with years past and, perhaps, for those in the future, while Japan has a tendency to focus exclusively on the inward tragedy that nuclear and chemical warfare has inflicted on it, many experts on the matter hope that Japan will also take the time to remember that its own involvements in World War II had also brought immeasurable suffering.

"We in civil society fervently hope that the easing of tensions on the Korean Peninsula will proceed through peaceable dialogue, " he said.

Japan has largely maintained a hard line on Pyongyang, in particular pushing for movement on citizens abducted decades ago by North Korean agents.

Fear of demand fall-off hits oil price
He noted that: "Anyone doing business with Iran will NOT be doing business with the United States". This was the company's first mini-term tender to buy United States oil, the executive, A.K.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abe said in his speech, "It is the duty of Japan, as the only country to have been hit with atomic bombs in wartime, to work tirelessly in pursuit of a world without nuclear weapons".

"Ultimately, I myself will have to directly face chairman Kim Jong Un and engage in dialogue and resolve the nuclear, missile and, above all, the all-important abduction issue, and then build new Japan-North Korea relations", Abe said in Hiroshima on Monday.

As in the previous year, he stopped short of mentioning the nuclear weapons ban treaty, only saying that a gap has emerged among countries over how to advance nuclear disarmament.

"Our nation, while maintaining our (non-nuclear weapons) principles, will patiently work to serve as a bridge between the two sides and lead efforts by the global community" to reduce nuclear weapons, Abe said.

The unit became Japan's top-secret biological and chemical warfare research base and operated as the nerve center of Japanese biological warfare in China and Southeast Asia during World War II.

Currently, more than 14,000 nuclear weapons are estimated to still exist in the world. The bombings claimed 1 Lakh 40 thousand lives in Hiroshima and 74 thousand in Nagasaki.
