At the time of her passing, Margot Kidder's cause of death was not revealed, as her manager only offered that she had died peacefully in her sleep.

Superman actress Margot Kidder's death has been ruled a suicide, and her daughter said Wednesday it's a relief to finally have the truth out.

When speaking about her lifelong struggle with mental illness, she told the Los Angeles Times, "I knew I was different, had these mind flights that other people didn't seem to have". She believes it is important to be open and honest about suicide and not hide it. She became paranoid and disappeared for four days until she was found in a stranger's backyard and taken to Olive View Medical Center by police.

Kidder was found dead at her home in Livingston, Montana, on May 13 at the age of 69.

In a statement released to ET by Park County coroner Richard Wood, it was announced that Kidder "died as a result of a self-inflicted drug and alcohol overdose".

"It's a very unique sort of grief and pain", McGuane said.

Kidder's death is one of several high-profile suicides this year that include celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain and fashion designer Kate Spade. In one of her final interviews, with the pop culture site Hey U Guys in 2016, Kidder said that she never anticipated the success of the Superman film and was unprepared for the instant worldwide stardom that it brought to her.

Both Kidder and co-star Christopher Reeve, who played Superman, were relative unknowns when they got their leading parts, and neither saw many major roles afterwards.

Kidder, like Carrie Fisher, was an advocate for ending the social shame surrounding mental health issues.

Most recently, Margot appeared in The Neighbourhood, which came out earlier this year.
