The landslides on Rinjani killed an Indonesian student, raising the death toll from the magnitude 6.4 Quake to 16.

Authorities said more than 500 people, mostly foreign tourists, have already come down from the mountain but 266 are still trapped up there. Among the fatalities were a 30-year-old Malaysian climber and another hiker who was hit by a landslide, local media reported.

At least 543 tourists have been rescued from a mountain in tourist destination of Lombok Island of central Indonesia after a strong quake cut off routes, a government official said on Tuesday.

"For supplies, they can still survive for another one to two days", Agus Hendra Sanjaya, spokesman for Mataram's search and rescue agency, said.

Rescuers are trying to evacuate hundreds of tourists stranded on Mount Rinjani on the Indonesian island of Lombok after a deadly natural disaster triggered landslides.

Some returned with harrowing tales of being caught out by the quake, which killed 16 people across the holiday island including one on the mountain.

"Our thoughts are with the people of Indonesia during this hard time, and I wish the injured a speedy recovery", he added. Officials said 280 aftershocks followed the initial quake.

A Malaysian was among the dead, with another six citizens injured, the foreign ministry in Kuala Lumpur said.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because of its location on the "Ring of Fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines encircling the Pacific Ocean. In 2004, a 9.1-magnitude natural disaster near Sumatra prompted a tsunami and led to more than 230,000 deaths.
