The International Red Cross says the airstrike hit a bus full of children, parked in a busy market in Dahyan, in Sa'ada province - controlled by the Houthis.

It accused the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Shiite rebels on the side of the government of hitting the bus in an air strike.

Houthi media broadcast graphic footage appearing to show the dead bodies of children.

A child lies in hospital after the school bus he was on was allegedly attacked by the Saudi-led coalition.

Fragments from the Houthi missile launched at Jizan Industrial City had killed one Yemeni civilian and wounded 11, Saudi state media said earlier on Thursday.

The UN children's agency UNICEF said it was "very concerned with the initial reports of children being killed".

"The victims were the children in the bus, passersby and merchants in the market, and some injuries are serious, so the number of deaths may increase".

The assault was the latest in a string of airstrikes to target civilians by an American-backed regional coalition led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Boris Johnson and the debate over burkas | Comment
Jacob Rees-Mogg, the leading backbench Brexiteer , said May was "clearly wrong" to have demanded Johnson apologise. Johnson on Sunday said women who wear burqas "look like letter boxes" and compared them to "bank robbers".

Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said "civilians continue to pay the highest price after three years of war in Yemen, thousands of them have been killed, injured or maimed".

The Saudi-led coalition called the airstrike a "legitimate military operation", and a retaliation to a Houthi ballistic missile that targeted the kingdom's Jizan province on Wednesday night, according to Saudi Arabia's official news agency.

The Houthis' al-Masirah TV reported that 39 people had been killed and 51 wounded, saying they were "mostly children".

"The Secretary-General calls on all parties to respect their obligations under global humanitarian law, in particular the fundamental rules of distinction, proportionality and precautions in attack", his spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said Thursday. It went on to accuse Houthi rebels of using children as human shields.

The ballistic missile was sacked from the northern Yemeni province of Amran towards the southern Saudi city of Jizan, said a coalition statement published by the official Saudi Press Agency.

He stressed that the Houthi leaders and terrorist elements responsible for firing ballistic missiles and targeting civilians will be targeted as part of the coalition efforts to prevent terrorist elements from harming regional and worldwide security.

The coalition denied responsibility for those attacks.

"It's hard to believe we live in a world where children should live in fear of such attacks, yet here we are", she added. "Parties to the conflict and those who have influence over them, including Security Council members, can and should choose to end this catastrophe for the sake of Yemen's children".
