This week it was announced that strike action by pilots across Europe is expected to cause maximum disruption to summer getaways, with around 250 Ryanair flights cancelled.

It said in a statement that the action was "unjustified" and "regrettable", but said that 85 percent of its flights would still be operated, and said that it had done all that it could to prevent the dispute escalating into industrial action, adding that the "majority of customers affected have already been re-accommodated on another Ryanair flight".

"My only options were to get a refund or to go down the route - which I have done - to claim compensation".

Customers have been notified and a majority of those affected moved to another Ryanair flight, the company said.

Ryanair has refused to issue a list of the flights cancelled, but The Times understands that at least 50 departures from the United Kingdom have been called off, with more than 250 cancelled in Ireland.

It also called on the striking unions to return to negotiations rather than "calling any more unjustified strikes".

A Dutch court on Thursday evening rejected a case from Ryanair seeking to block pilots in the Netherlands from joining the strike, affecting about 22 flights.

Ryanair, which flies in 37 countries and carried 130 million passengers last year, averted widespread Christmas strikes last year by agreeing to recognise trade unions for the first time in its 33-year history.

But Ryanair pilots say they earn less than counterparts at other airlines like Lufthansa.

Irish-based Ryanair is Europe's largest low-priced airline.

Unions also want the airline to give contractors the same work conditions as staff employees.

"It's annoying that it's happening in the summer holidays, but it's the only means they have".

"Ryanair is the only multinational in Belgium that doesn't respect the Belgian law and that's not normal", said Didier Lebbe, a representative of union ACV-CSC, whose demands include securing its pilots pay when they are on stand-by.

But some people took to Twitter to complain at how Ryanair handled the debacle after their flights were canceled.
