US jury orders Monsanto to pay $289m in Roundup trial
11 August, 2018, 23:49
A terminally ill man has been awarded $289 million in the first cancer-related trial against agricultural giant Monsanto.
Mr Johnson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2014.
A Californian jury ruled that Monsanto knew its Roundup and Rangerpro weedkillers contained harmful glyphosates that are risky to the public - and had failed to warn consumers of the health risks it presented. He sprayed large quantities from a 189 litre tank attached to a truck, and during gusty winds the product would cover his face, one of his attorneys, Brent Wisner, said. Hopefully this thing will start to get the attention it needs.
Mr Johnson used Roundup and a similar product, Ranger Pro, as a pest control manager at a San Francisco Bay Area school district, his lawyers said.
Speaking to reporters after the verdict, Monsanto VP Scott Partridge said that the company will appeal and continue to "vigorously defend" the herbicide.
Hundreds of lawsuits claiming Roundup causes cancer have been given the green light to proceed to trial, despite Monsanto claims that there is no connection between glyphosate and cancer.
"All the efforts by Monsanto to put their finger in the dyke and hold back the science; the science is now too persuasive", Kennedy said, pointing to "cascading" scientific evidence about the health dangers of Roundup.
At one point, when a hose broke, the weedkiller covered his entire body.
The jury ordered the agricultural multi-national to pay $250 million in punitive damages together with other costs that brought the total figure to nearly $290 million.
The manufacturer of the weedkiller, Monsanto, has insisted that British consumers are safe to continue using their Roundup products, which are widely sold at DIY stores and used by British farmers.
"We will do everything to make sure Mr. Johnson and his family share in that award".
Plaintiff DeWayne Johnson has won his case against chemical giant Monsanto.
The landmark ruling given by a jury in the United States, that a glyphosate-based weed killer was the cause for a groundskeeper's cancer, could probably bolster the prospects of the Sri Lankans seeking justice due to the affects of the disputed agrochemical.
The latest annual report of Monsanto's India unit states that its brand Roundup maintains market leadership with sales of around Rs 185.66 crore, which is 28 percent of its net sales of Rs 667.44 crore in FY18.Roundup is primarily used in agriculture and places like roadsides, public spaces, railway tracks and gardens.
According to his attorneys, Johnson read the label and even contacted the company after developing a rash but was never warned it could cause cancer.
A California jury found Monsanto acted with "malice" and that its weed killers Roundup and the professional grade version RangerPro contributed "substantially" to Dewayne Johnson's terminal illness.
Mr Partridge said that more than 800 scientific studies and reviews and conclusions by regulators in the U.S. and around the world "support the fact that glyphosate does not cause cancer".
