Tension gripped Washington, DC, and Charlottesville, Va., ahead of the "Unite the Right 2" rally, scheduled for Sunday in the nation's capital on the anniversary of last year's deadly demonstration in the Virginia city.

They declined, though, to detail specific security threats or whether known white supremacists and nationalists, such as rally organizer Jason Kessler, would be in the area.

More: What is the alt-right?

Sunday's rallies come at a time when the wounds from last year's clash in Charlottesville remain raw, particularly in regards to the death of counterprotester Heather Heyer, who was killed when a suspected neo-Nazi sympathizer drove a vehicle into a crowd.

Fields was charged with 29 hate crimes.

In August 2017, white supremacist demonstrators and counterprotesters squared off in violent clashes in Charlottesville, site of the University of Virginia.

"It's scary", she told Al Jazeera prior to Sunday's rally.

I'm in Charlottesville today writing about this extraordinary police presence.

Incendiary as it may be, by Washington standards Sunday's gatherings will be tiny. According to Young, the rally will host a number of speakers from a variety of different backgrounds to "celebrate our our existence and our resilience ". They described a massive influx of law enforcement officers, two checkpoints south of the Downtown Mall and a significant list of items banned within the perimeter. It said "there is no expectation of privacy" and told participants not to talk to the media. Several counterprotests have also received permission to gather nearby.

The vice president also noted he and the second lady will be praying for the victims of that day in Virginia and continue praying Americans come together in new and renewed ways.

Preparations have been in the works for Sunday's event for months between law local enforcement agencies, U.S. Park Police and the U.S. Secret Service.

"Officers will be on high alert for anyone who will be carrying a firearm", he warned. The statue and the park in which it's located were the center of last year's Unite the Right rally.

Kessler's application said he expected up to 400 people to attend the rally.

Attendees of "Unite the Right 2", a follow-up to the controversial far-right protest previous year, have been told to bring Confederate flags, wear body cameras and expect to be provoked.

On Saturday, Trump condemned "all types of racism" in a Twitter post marking the anniversary.

Facing another round of accusations of bigotry and approaching the one-year anniversary of the deadly white nationalist riot in Charlottesville, Virginia, President Donald Trump has in recent days gone on the offensive, arguing that he is the president of "ALL Americans".

Trump insulted the intelligence of National Basketball Association star LeBron James and CNN anchor Don Lemon, both of whom are black, reignited his crusade against black football players protesting against police brutality and told a group of business leaders that Chinese students studying in the United States were spies.

"We have people coming to our city for the sole objective of spewing hate", Bowser said at a news conference Thursday.

Counter-protesters turned out to demonstrate against the rally.

"I'm still processing that this is actually happening".
