Modi unfurled the national flag at the Red Fort on the occasion of India's 72nd Independence Day. "Delhi's streets are free of power brokers", Modi said while highlighting the damage that corruption has done to the country and steps taken by his government. He said that the times have changed and now the North East is in the news for reasons that gives optimism to the rest of the country. "We are poised for record economic growth", the prime minister said. "We aim to double the income of farmers by 2022". Mayawati said that the speech "failed to infuse" new energy or hope and the prime minister "failed to assure the safety of life" and property of people which is of utmost importance. "It is essential to ensure that we free the poor of India from the clutches of poverty in which they can not afford health care", he added.

In his 80-minute speech, Modi said the pace of building highways, electrifying villages and building toilets has increased since his landslide 2014 election win that devastated the main opposition Congress party. "Today the world says that the sleeping elephant has woken up, is walking and has joined the race", Modi added.

Modi drew a comparison between the situation in 2013 and how things stand today, and said if the pace of the UPA government's a year ago was maintained, it would have taken decades, centuries and generations to build as many toilets, distribute as many LPG connections among the poor and lay down as much optical fibre as his government has done.

The comment was an apparent reference to International Monetary Fund's commentary on India last week in which it said the country is on track to hold its position as one of the world's fastest-growing economies as reforms start to pay off. "India will be the engine of growth". "Our Army personnel had faith in us and we were able to take a decision on OROP". "We are working to ensure peace across the nation", he said. "Prior to 2014, global institutions used to say the Indian economy is risky. Today the same institutions and people are saying that reform momentum is giving strength to fundamentals", the PM said.

He also urged the worldwide community to raise their voice so that the Kashmir people could get their inalienable right. Pakistan Rangers officials at the Wagah border crossing exchanged candies with Indian Border Security Force personnel.

PM Modi quotes Tamil poet Subramania Bharati, who said that India will not only emerge as a great nation, but will inspire others as well. He interacted with them while security persons were seen having a tough time in controlling over-enthusiastic children who tried to shake hands with the Prime Minister. "Now we have brought Delhi to the door of North East", Modi said.

The measures initiated by the government had also led to near doubling of direct tax assesses from almost four crore to 6.75 crore and indirect tax assesses from 75 lakh to 1.16 crore on account of introduction of GST apart from barring over three lakh suspicious companies in the anti-black money drive.

He only mentioned that Ayushman Bhava aka Modi Care - A Universal Health Care Programme will cater the needs of 10 Crore Indians. "It is essential to ensure that we free the poor of India from the clutches of poverty due to which they can not afford healthcare".
