There is no safe level of alcohol, a new study concludes - upending previous guidance that low levels of consumption can be safe, and even beneficial to health. Some scientists are now saying none.

The report linked alcohol to the deaths of 2.8 million people worldwide in 2016, 2.2% of all deaths in women and 6.8% in men, making it the seventh leading risk factor for mortality and disease.

Washington D.C. [USA]: In a shocking revelation, a recent study has found that alcohol is associated with almost one in 10 deaths in people aged 15-49 years old.

"The conclusions of the study are clear and unambiguous: alcohol is a colossal global health issue", said Robyn Burton of King's College London, another author.

People who live very long and happy lives will often claim that it was drinking a glass of red wine - or maybe even a glass of brandy in the morning - that has kept them going for so long.

In this age group, the leading causes of alcohol-related deaths included tuberculosis, road injuries, and self-harm.

In fact, sided with multiples studies that say drinking alcohol in a certain amount every day is fine, the belief only gets concretized.

Drinking patterns varied greatly around the world, the study found.

In 2010, Belarus was the country where alcohol was consumed the most, with an average of 17.5 litres drunk per capita, according to the World Health Organization.

An additional four people would be affected in either way if people drank just one alcoholic drink a day - an increase of 0.5% - and 63 more people (so 977 in 100,000) would be at risk of injury or disease if they drank two drinks a day, a 7% increase. On average, each day women consumed 0.73 alcoholic drinks, and men drank 1.7 drinks.

"There is no safe level of driving, but governments do not recommend that people avoid driving", Spiegelhalter, who also was not involved in the research, said in a statement.

Professor Emmanuela Gakidou, from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, said: 'Worldwide we need to revisit alcohol control policies and health programmes, and to consider recommendations for abstaining from alcohol'.

"Although the health risks associated with alcohol starts off being small with one drink a day, they then rise rapidly as people drink more", Griswold added.

The researchers admit moderate drinking may protect against heart disease but found that the risk of cancer and other diseases outweighs these protections.

The research also said that the "myth of the drunk Irish man" is inaccurate.

.

"We're used to hearing that a drink or two a day is fine".

For populations 50 and older, cancers accounted for a large proportion of alcohol-related deaths, 27.1 percent for females and 18.9 percent for males.

University of Cambridge epidemiologist Steven Bell co-authored aseparate study published in April in The Lancet that found drinking isbeneficial in lowering the risk for heart attack.

According to the scientists, the impact on overall health from alcohol consumption can be great.

"The take-home message being that people shouldn't drink under the belief that it will lower their risk of disease", he said, "and those of us who opt to drink should minimize our intake if we wish to prolong our life and well-being".
