Military forces work on a van in Winterslow, England, on March 12, 2018, as investigations continue into the nerve-agent poisoning of Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

The men, Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, told the Kremlin-financed network Russia Today that they had traveled from Moscow to the English provincial city of Salisbury in March to visit its ancient cathedral, not to assassinate Sergei Skripal, a former double agent who sold secrets to Britain.

The two Russian men, who say they are both about 40, were identified last week as suspects by the British government.

The interviewer, RT's editor-in-chief Margarita Simonyan, at times seemed more interested in insinuations about the men's personal relationship than their alleged military status.

"These are ordinary citizens".

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "The lies and blatant fabrications in this interview given to a Russian-state sponsored TV station are an insult to public's intelligence".

"When your life turned upside down, you don't know what to do and where to go", Boshirov said.

The Russian nationals say their friends recommended them to visit Salisbury and "enjoy its Gothic architecture". "We didn't have it", Mr Boshirov said.

Simonyan's announcement comes a day after President Vladimir Putin said Russian Federation had located Petrov and Boshirov, but that there was nothing special or criminal about them.

While they may have passed Skripal's home during their visit to Salisbury, "we don't know where it's located" and "I'd never heard this name before", Boshirov said.

Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov have been accused by the United Kingdom of attempting to murder a former spy with a rare nerve agent in Salisbury, England.

"There's the famous Salisbury Cathedral, famous not just in Europe, but in the whole world", he said.

In the men's first interview since they were named publicly they denied carrying women's perfume, after police discovered a counterfeit bottle that contained a "significant amount" of Novichok.

She said the new sanctions will include banking sanctions, a broader ban on Russian procurement of defense articles, and a block on any foreign aid. We arrived in Salisbury on March 3 and tried to walk through the town, but we lasted for only half an hour because it was covered in snow.

The men denied trying to kill Skripal and his daughter Yulia with the Soviet-designed Novichok nerve agent.

The men's comments were published on RT's webpage.

"The customs are checking everything, they would have questions as to why men have women's perfume in their luggage".

London renewed its assertions that the men were officers of the Russian military intelligence service GRU and lied about their involvement in the poisoning of one-time Russian agent Sergei Skripal.

They had been for lunch at a restaurant in central Salisbury on 4 March when they were found "in an extremely serious condition" on a bench outside the restaurant. They recovered after treatment in the hospital. "They're a normal pair who just got into trouble, I'm sure they feel pretty bad now", said Leonid, a 58-year-old entrepreneur.
