A US Border Patrol agent was taken into custody in Texas on Saturday morning in connection with the killings of four people and aggravated kidnapping, according to Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar. One of the victims was a transgender woman, said Webb County District Attorney Isidro Alaniz.

Law enforcement officers gather near the scene where the body of a woman was found near Interstate 35 north of Laredo, Texas on Saturday.

Ortiz reportedly fled from state troopers before being arrested in the parking lot of a Laredo hotel.

"We do consider this to be a serial killer", Alaniz said. His known victims were all believed to have worked as prostitutes, and according to a CBS News report, investigators have not ruled out the possibility of more victims. Authorities said they believe Ortiz acted alone.

The sheriff's office said all four bodies have been found, and no other victims are expected. On Thursday a 42-year-old woman was found critically injured by the side of a highway and died in hospital. His first victim Laredo resident Melissa Ramirez, 29, (left) was found dead on September 4.

Investigators in the latest death case in Laredo have revealed the name of the victim.

Alaniz said the case broke Friday when a woman was reportedly kidnapped and escaped.

Alaniz said authorities tracked down Ortiz after a woman, also described as working as a prostitute, escaped after having been abducted.

Andrew Meehan, a US Customs and Border Protection spokesperson, said in a statement to CNN that the agency is fully cooperating with investigators. While it is CBP policy to not comment on the details of an ongoing investigation, criminal action by our employees is not, and will not be tolerated, ' the agency said.

"I extend my condolences to the families of the victims during this hard time".

"The arrest of the border patrol agent who has allegedly committed multiple murders could not have happened without the hard work and expertise of the Texas Rangers, the Webb County Sheriff's Office, the Webb County District Attorney's Office, and Laredo Police Department".
