Now, Argento has issued a statement to McGowan via Twitter, claiming she has 24 hours to retract her previous comments before the actress takes "immediate legal action".

"It is with genuine regret that I am giving you 24 hours to retract and apologize for the horrendous lies made against me in your statement of August 27th", the xXx star wrote on Twitter on Monday. I must inform you & [Rain Dove] that I've instructed Mishcon de Reya to seek substantial damages for deception, fraud, coercion and libel.

Argento and McGowan had previously been on friendly terms; they were drawn together after both women came forward detailing sexual assault allegations against Harvey Weinstein. I loved you. You've spent and risked a lot to stand with the MeToo movement.

In McGowan's statement, she urged the actress to be "honest and fair" following allegations that she had reached a $380,000 settlement with Jimmy Bennett at the end of previous year, after he accused her of sexual assault. Anyone can be be better- I hope you can be, too. She called on Argento to "be the person you wish Harvey could have been" - referring, of course, to Weinstein and his continuous denial of any sex assault or harassment accusations brought against him.

"Rain also shared that Asia had stated that she'd been receiving unsolicited nudes of Jimmy since he had been 12". McGowan also claimed that Argento admitted to Dove that she had "slept" with Bennett. Be honest. Be fair. The Grindhouse actress is yet to publicly respond to the legal threat.

"Asia you were my friend", said part of McGowan's lengthy statement.

Bennett has previously said that he chose to come forward about the alleged sexual assault when Argento went public with allegations that she was a victim of producer Harvey Weinstein. "It wasn't fair and it wasn't right". In the documents, Bennett said that Argento gave him alcohol, kissed him and performed oral sex on him before the pair had sexual intercourse.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has said it is looking into the reports of the encounter between Bennett and Argento in a Marina del Rey hotel room in 2013 but so far have said nothing about whether any charges will be laid.

"I am shocked, appalled, and disgusted by their representations, mischaracterisations, and attacks", Sattro said in a statement last week.
