Space station Hayabusa-2 landed on an asteroid two probe

The probe will also release a French-German landing vehicle named Mobile Asteroid Surface Scout (MASCOT) for surface observation.

"I can not find words to express how happy I am that we were able to realize mobile exploration on the surface of an asteroid", said Yuichi Tsuda, project manager for the Hayabusa2 probe.

Being isolated on the far side is just a temporary setback, however.

This is a picture from MINERVA-II1.

We can not assume that everything is fine, of course - touching down on an asteroid 200 million miles (300 million kilometers) from Earth is a very tricky business.

Supreme Court nominee accuser agrees to testify before US Senate
Grassley has set a hearing for Monday for both Ford and Kavanaugh to testify about the incident. He said it would be "wonderful" if Ford testified and "unfortunate" otherwise.

Preparations have been underway for the landing since the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's (JAXA) spacecraft reached the "dumpling-shaped" asteroid in June.

The main feature of landers is their ability to running on the surface. Philae didn't get enough sunlight there to recharge its batteries as planned, and the lander's science work was cut short as a result.

MINERVA-II1 sent photos of the cratered asteroid as it approached the surface.

According to the agency, the 600-kg Hayabusa2, which was launched from the Tanegashima Space Center in southwestern Japan in December 2014, has experienced no problems throughout its journey totaling 3.2 billion km. Each of them is 18 centimeters in diameter and 7 centimeters in height, and weighs about one kilogram. The left half of the image is the asteroid surface. The aim of the mission is to collect samples from the 900-meter-long Ruige asteroid and bring them back to Earth for study. This asteroid is believed to be a particularly early one, with a wealth of water and organic material that will shed light on the "building blocks of Earth". Known collectively as MINERVA-II1, both are equipped a stereo camera, a wide-angle camera and a thermometer, along with a novel mechanism that allows them to hop short distances in the asteroid's weak gravity. A slight turn of a wheel would send a robot up into space, so hopping is the way to go. Each rover remains "airborne" for about 15 minutes with each hop, moving approximately 15 meters (~50 feet) each time. MINERVA-II1 is the world's first rover to land on the surface of an asteroid.
