Kavanaugh-Ford hearing: A dramatic lesson on gender roles
Fox News host Chris Wallace on Christine Blasey Ford’s testimony: ‘This is a disaster for the Republicans’
28 September, 2018, 16:11
After listening to Dr. Christine Blasey Ford's raw and emotional testimony over the course of several hours, the Senate Judiciary Committee got the chance to grill Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh. "Here's my understanding, if you lived a good life people would recognize it". She told the committee that she wished she could provide more detailed answers to questions, but said said she does not remember as much as she would "like to". While almost every other Republican on the panel was leaning forward and appearing sympathetic to Kavanaugh as the judge angrily decried Democratic tactics and emotionally defended himself, Flake notably leaned back, at times with his arms crossed, at times scowling.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., led the way with a scathing assault on Democrats sitting a few feet away. Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii hit out at Mitchell's approach during the hearing, saying she had aimed to undermine Ford's credibility.
And his explanation about vomiting after drinking beer - that he was known for having a weak stomach - provoked scepticism among Democratic senators. That is a tragedy, not just for him and for Ford, who, as Sen.
The messages were directed at two audiences - one was Trump, who had backed Kavanaugh but left open the possibility that he would pull the nomination if he believed Blasey, and the other was the clutch of three or four senators whose votes seemed genuinely in play.
It said that the nomination itself has become a referendum on #MeToo - and that confirming Kavanaugh would send the wrong message.
The magazine said that Kavanaugh's hearing was now more than a battle of policy issues: "The hearings and the committee's deliberations are now also a bellwether of the way the country treats women when their reports of harassment, assault and abuse threaten to derail the careers of powerful men".
"This is a circus, the consequences will extend long past my nomination", he said.
Republicans are pushing to seat Kavanaugh before the November midterms, when Senate control could fall to the Democrats and a replacement Trump nominee could have even greater difficulty.
Should that fail and Kavanaugh be confirmed, it would amount, to a "devastating blow" - at least for now. He has denied all of the accusations, but it remained unclear how the dramatic testimony by Ford and Kavanaugh would affect his prospects. "He's raised his right hand many times taking an oath to the Constitution, swearing to uphold the law, and the most recent vetting of Brett Kavanaugh occurred this summer", Conway said. Republicans hold a slim 51-49 majority in the Senate, and with every other vote likely decided, any two no votes would tank Kavanaugh's nomination. "If you really wanted to know the truth, you wouldn't have done what you've done to this guy".
Zoe Chance, a marketing professor at Yale School of Management, said that in terms of winning over public opinion, Ford and Kavanaugh "are both doing the right thing".
The statement did not indicate which way Flake was leaning.
Mitchell continued: "Dr. Ford, do you expect the price of that polygraph to be passed on to you?"
