Amazon Makes a Big Move on Minimum Wage

Amazon will raise company's minimum wage to $15 for all US employees Amazon raises wages for lower-paid workers

In a statement, CEO Jeff Bezos said that "we listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we wanted to lead".

Amazon has raised the pay of thousands of workers in the United Kingdom and USA, after coming under increasing fire from campaigners over its low wages. The median pay for an Amazon employee past year was $28,446 worldwide, according to government filings, which includes full-time, part-time and temporary workers. In the US, Senator Bernie Sanders has publicly accused the company of underpaying its workers, and last month introduced a bill aimed to force Amazon to increase the amount it pays workers. Amazon has also thrown down a gauntlet to its competitors, challenging it to match its wages, and has said it will push to increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour. They have drawn a contrast with Bezos' spectacular wealth: He is the richest person alive, worth an estimated $165 billion.

The new floor, which will take effect November 1, applies to more than 250,000 employees who work in the company's network of warehouses, logistics depots and customer service call centers, as well as the more than 100,000 temporary hires the company brings on to handle the holiday season's uptick in orders.

The company also said it would press for a change to the U.S. minimum wage level. And in that time, the rate "has lost about 9.6 percent of its purchasing power to inflation", the Pew Research Center said past year. In 29 states and Washington, D.C., it's higher than the federal rate.

Workers across the country have pushed for a $15 minimum wage as they have drawn attention to growing income inequality.

The Obama administration had called for raising the minimum wage to $10.10, but the proposal went nowhere during an era of divided government.

Retailer Target Corp raised its minimum hourly wage last year to $11 and promised to raise it to $15 an hour by the end of 2020 while the world's largest retailer and private employer Walmart raised its minimum wage to $11 an hour earlier this year.
