Meteorite used as doorstop for decades worth $100,000

Frank Williams | 05 October, 2018, 20:41

Central Michigan University geology professor Mona Sirbescu said that she knew the rock was "something special" as soon as she saw it.

The doorstop that a MI man had been using since 1988 has turned out to be a meteorite worth $100,000.

The man told Sirbescu that he kept the rock for the next 30 years, even after moving away from the farm.

An examination found that the rock is an iron-nickel meteorite composed of mostly iron with 12 percent nickel. The then owner told the man it was part of the property, and he could keep it.

"I walked in there and there's this rock and i said you got everything all cleaned up but what's this? and he said oh that's a meteorite", says David, who owns the meteorite.

A Grand Rapids, Mich., man discovered that a 22-pound rock he has been using as a doorstop for 30 years is worth more than $100,000.

Central Michigan University The meteorite was reportedly found on a farm in Edmore, Michigan, in the 1930s.

This January, southern MI experienced a meteor flash that showered fragments of space rock all over Livingston County.

The farmer said that it had come down onto the property in the '30s - "and it made a heck of a noise when it hit", the new owner recalled him saying, according to CMU's statement. He reportedly used the meteorite as a doorstop and sent it to school with his children for show and tell.

The meteor that blazed through MI this January changed his life's trajectory as he read accounts of people finding and selling small pieces of the meteorites.

The chunk of iron-which was confirmed as a space rock by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. -is the sixth-largest meteorite ever found in MI, according to the museum.

The chunk of iron and nickel was later valued at $100,000 after the Smithsonian Institution verified the find, CMU said in a release.

"Just think, what I was holding is a piece of the early solar system that literally fell into our hands". "I wonder how much mine is worth", he said. The Smithsonian is considering purchasing the meteorite and adding it to the museum's collection.

As CMU notes, the man has pledged to donate 10% of the sale price to the university as a token of gratitude for helping him identify it.
