In a blatant attempt to invert the script on election "meddling" and interference, Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday accused the Chinese government of seeking to undermine US democracy and charged, without evidence, that Beijing is acting malevolently because "China wants a different American president".

Pence's speech at the Hudson Institute think tank in Washington marked a sharpened USA approach toward China that goes beyond the bitter trade war between the world´s two biggest economies and includes disputes such as cyber activities, Taiwan and freedom of the seas.

"Worst of all, China has initiated an unprecedented effort to influence American public opinion, the 2018 elections, and the environment leading into the 2020 presidential election".

President Trump raised eyebrows by declaring last week, without offering evidence, that China was meddling in the midterms.

"We will not be intimidated".

Vice President Mike Pence delivered a hard-hitting speech Thursday criticising China for a host of aggressive actions from economics to geopolitics.

Pence said China has responded to Trump's tough trade policies against Beijing with tariffs of its own created to inflict maximum political damage.

"It is very ridiculous for the USA side to stigmatise its normal exchanges and cooperation with China as China interfering in its internal affairs and elections", Hua said.

"The worldwide community has already seen very clearly in the end who is invading the sovereignty of other countries, interfering in their internal affairs, and damaging their interests".

The report, which resulted from a Trump directive in July 2017 to assess the health of industries whose products and services are important to national defense, also accused China of "systematic theft" of US weapons systems and the illicit transfer of dual-use technology that has upset the military balance between the USA and China.

Pence also denounced China's manoeuvres in the South China Sea, its oppression of Christians, Muslims and other religious believers, and Chinese President Xi Jinping's signature infrastructure and foreign policy initiative.

Pence said the administration will continue to respect the One China Policy, but added: "America will always believe Taiwan's embrace of democracy shows a better path for all the Chinese people".

Pence's speech at the Hudson Institute think tank in Washington marked a sharpened USA approach toward China that goes beyond the bitter trade war between the world's two biggest economies and includes disputes such as cyber activities, Taiwan, freedom of the seas and human rights. But Pence said that a senior member of the intelligence community recently told him that "what the Russians are doing pales in comparison to what China is doing across this country".

No administration official has offered evidence that China is seeking or has sought to weaponize hacked, politically sensitive information, as Russian Federation did during the 2016 presidential election.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian defended the naval maneuver on Tuesday, accusing the United States of threatening China's sovereignty and safety by repeatedly sending warships to disputed areas of the South China Sea.

China called US accusation of interference in its elections "extremely ridiculous", and defended its foreign policy record in response to a lengthy criticism by US Vice-President Mike Pence.

"The United States Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever worldwide law allows and our national interests demand", he said.

He accused China of "reckless harassment" because of an incident on Sunday in which a Chinese naval vessel almost collided with a United States destroyer, the Decatur, near the Spratly islands.
