Google is killing Google

Google shuts down Google+ after a massive data breach which potentially leaked information of over 500,000 users Google+ to Shut Down Following Bug That Exposed 500K Profiles

Google headquarters in Mountain View, California.

Google said that there are up to 438 apps that use the affected API.

This report also indicated that Google planned to essentially shut down Google+ as it unveils new security measures, and the company quickly made that official in an announcement, saying the platform was permanently closing its doors to consumers.

A Wall Street Journal report published at the same time with Google's blog post claimed the API bug was far worse, and might have leaked user data since 2015, being only discovered when Google engineers started prodding Google sites for privacy leaks in preparation for the EU GDPR deadline.

The security breach was a bug that potentially gave developers access to personal profile information of more than half a million user accounts, though Google said it sound no evidence that any developers had abused the bug.

This review crystallized what we've known for a while: that while our engineering teams have put a lot of effort and dedication into building Google+ over the years, it has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption.

The US internet giant said it will "sunset" the Google+ social network for consumers that failed to gain meaningful traction after being launched in 2011 as a challenge to Facebook.

The news comes as Silicon Valley companies have been increasingly scrutinized for their data collection practices.

Corbin looked confused on the outside of the ring, and that's when the Conquistador revealed that he was actually Kurt Angle. The four legends will meet in a tag team match at the November 2 show.

The same month that the bug was discovered, Facebook's Cambridge Analytica data scandal came to light, prompting politicians on both sides of the Atlantic to call for hearings and regulation.

Google has already recently drawn controversy over its data collection practices.

This story is early in its reporting and we don't have all the facts yet.

Google also feared that disclosing the Google+ privacy issue would mean that CEO Sundar Pichai would have to testify in Congress, just as Mark Zuckerberg did.

No matter how much you use social media, you probably haven't used Google+ very often, if at all.

It was referring to application programming interface software for the social network. Google eventually peeled away some of the services most popular features, including Hangout chats and its photo capabilities, into standalone apps. For example, Google says that 90 percent of Google+ sessions last less than five seconds.

Google will take the next 10 months to kill off G+ for consumers, finishing it off by August of 2019.

Google says that like other tech companies, it has encouraged third-party developers to "build on top of our various services". The API was created to only keep logs for two week periods.
