His path to confirmation was turbulent - opposition to him intensified after Christine Blasey Ford accused him of sexually assaulting her, allegations Kavanaugh denied.

The president - whose Republicans fear losing at least the lower house of Congress in November - angrily predicted that the Kavanaugh row would backfire on Democrats.

As Michael Tomasky points out, with Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr., there are now four justices who were confirmed by Senators representing a national minority, and if Trump gets to fill one more seat, a majority of the court will likely have been confirmed in this manner.

The new justice is widely expected to push the court further to the right as he is replacing Kennedy, a conservative who sometimes voted with the liberal justices on key social issues, including in pivotal cases on gay rights.

"On behalf of our nation, I want to apologise to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the bad pain you have been forced to endure", Mr Trump said on Monday (Oct 8) during a ceremonial swearing-in at the White House.

Trump noted that Kavanaugh's wife, Ashley, was in the East Room audience at the White House, along with his two daughters Liza and Margaret.

Immigration, firearms, and asbestos exposure cases will greet Brett Kavanaugh during his first week as a Supreme Court justice.

Those who were there held signs saying, "We will not forget" and "We do not consent", following the acrimonious fight that culminated in Kavanaugh's 50-48 Senate confirmation Saturday.

Trump continued: "And with that I must state that you, sir, under historic scrutiny, were proven innocent".

United States President Donald Trump said on Monday that he was apologising on behalf of the whole country to his new conservative Supreme Court justice after one of the most contentious confirmation processes in U.S. history.

"What happened to the Kavanaugh family violates every notion of fairness, decency and due process", the president said in his remarks at the swearing in.

"The American public has seen this charade, and it was a disgrace".

Boarding the Marine One helicopter at the White House, he branded the sexual assault allegations that threatened to derail Kavanaugh's path to the top court "a hoax" and "all made up, fabricated".

As he left the White House for an event in Florida on Monday, Mr Trump said: "So I've been hearing that now they're thinking about impeaching a brilliant jurist". Justice Kavanaugh took the two required oaths privately at the court last Saturday, letting him begin work right away.

The other eight justices also were at the White House Monday.

Kavanaugh will hear his first Supreme Court case, a day after President Trump swore in his nominee.

When Trump ran for the presidency in 2016, he vowed to appoint conservative judges to the Supreme Court, disclosing a list of possible candidates.

But after being sworn in, Kavanaugh struck a markedly more conciliatory tone.
