Donald Trump has apologised to Brett Kavanaugh at a White House ceremony, claiming that his new Supreme Court justice had been "proven innocent" of sexual assault allegations.

The Senate vote approving Kavanaugh's nomination followed a bitter partisan fight that became a firestorm after sexual misconduct allegations emerged.

The ruling authored by Kavanaugh, confirmed by the Senate on Saturday after a contentious political battle, was made by a divided three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, the court on which he formerly served.

And on Monday evening he was the guest of honor at a ceremonial swearing-in at the White House.

Trump used his introduction of Kavanaugh to slam the judge's opponents.

With justices seated by seniority, President Donald Trump's two appointees will flank the Supreme Court bench, Justice Neil Gorsuch at one end and Kavanaugh at the other.

After Judge Kavanaugh had placed his hand on a bible and sworn to perform his duties to the best of his ability, President Trump said: "On behalf of our nation I want to apologise to Brett and the entire Kavanaugh family for the bad pain and suffering you have been forced to endure".

Retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, the 82-year-old jurist who Kavanaugh replaced, was in the courtroom, as were members of the new justice's family.

Kavanaugh joins the Supreme Court today after he was sworn in at a private ceremony on Saturday and a public ceremony on Monday, report the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post in stories here and here. Kavanaugh will hear his first cases on Tuesday, when the court convenes at 10 a.m. But the justices, who often highlight their efforts to work together as a collegial body, are likely to focus on the cases before them.

Kavanaugh's confirmation proceedings exploded in controversy after Christine Blasey Ford went public with allegations that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982.

"His confirmation is an inflection point in the history of the court; there is no pretending any more that the court is an apolitical institution", Fallon said.

Protesters crowded hallways in the Capitol before Kavanaugh's confirmation vote and pounded on the Supreme Court doors afterward. At the time McConnell said: "The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court justice". He helped to vet Roberts and Alito when Kavanaugh was working as a lawyer in the White House.

Ultimately, every Democrat voted against Kavanaugh except for Sen.

He told an audience that included the entire Supreme Court and a Who´s Who of Republican movers and shakers that he had "no bitterness" and would never bring politics into the top court. "We stood up to the mob", he said.

"For as long as Kavanaugh sits on the court, he will remain a symbol of partisan anger, a haunting reminder that behind the smiling face of judicial benevolence lies the force of an urgent will to power", Yale law professor Robert Post wrote in Politico. But when asked again Sunday about it, he said different rules might apply if the same party controls the Senate and White House.

Republicans hold a 51-49 majority in the Senate, with several seats up for grabs in November.
