US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has called for Saudi Arabia to support an investigation into Khashoggi's disappearance. He must then report to the Senate within 120 days with a determination and a decision on the imposition of sanctions.

When asked for video footage on Khashoggi, Saudi officials reportedly told Republican Sen.

Twenty-two United States senators on Wednesday forced a USA investigation of whether human rights sanctions should be imposed over the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist last seen as he entered the Saudi consulate in Turkey on October 2. The Turkish government has claimed that Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, on the orders of the Saudi government.

Reporters Without Borders said in a statement that between 25 and 30 professional and non-professional journalists are now detained in Saudi Arabia.

Khashoggi's Turkish fiance, Hatice Cengiz, who was waiting outside, said he never re-appeared.

The official told the Times the assassination was ordered at the highest levels of the Saudi royal court.

"We're demanding everything", Trump told reporters. We are going to take a serious look at it.

"We don't know what has happened to him".

One member of the squad appears to be Maher Mutreb, a Saudi intelligence officer who was based in London in 2007.

Corker says, "the Saudis have a lot of explaining to do because all indications are that they have been involved at minimum with his disappearance".

Aksam said they left their hotel later in the morning.

The Times adds that "media reports have cited Turkish investigators as saying they believe he was killed soon after entering the building and his corpse cut to pieces and disposed of by an elite Saudi security team".

A veteran journalist, Khashoggi disappeared on October 2 after entering Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul to arrange paperwork for his wedding to Cengiz, a Turk.

The revelation marks a potentially explosive twist in the case of Mr. Khashoggi, 59, who vanished a week ago while visiting the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul. CCTV footage showed him entering the building.

A former USA intelligence official - who, like others, spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive matter - noted that the details of the operation, which involved sending two teams totaling 15 men, in two private aircraft arriving and departing Turkey at different times, bore the hallmarks of a "rendition", in which someone is extralegally removed from one country and deposited for interrogation in another.

Turkish authorities say Mr Khashoggi was killed. Under the Vienna Convention, foreign diplomatic missions are sovereign territory and a host country can not enter without permission. President Trump needs to raise this case immediately with Saudi Arabia and Turkey and demand answers.

Turkey's private NTV news channel identified one member of the alleged 15-member team as the head of a Saudi forensic science agency.

A source told the Post that prior to Khashoggi going missing, US intelligence intercepted Saudi officials' communications, which revealed a plan to capture Khashoggi and get him to Saudi Arabia. Both countries conducted separate coordinated patrols in the region between areas liberated by Turkey's Operation Euphrates Shield and Manbij, according to Turkish officials.
