The cover up: According to a report in The Wall Street Journal, Google discovered a bug in Google+ code in March and promptly fixed it, but decided not to reveal its existence.

An internal memo from legal and policy staff reportedly said the company found no evidence that the data had been misused, but was unable to know for certain.

Google+ was launched in June, 2011 as a way to compete with other social networks such as Facebook.

"Going forward, consumers will get more fine-grained control over what account data they choose to share with each app". In a blog post published right after the WSJ's report, Google confirmed that it is shutting down Google+, as well as confirming a number of the details from the WSJ report.

Allegedly, the glitch enabled outside developers to gain unauthorized access to the relevant for quite some time - from 2015 until Google's discovery in March of this year. Now the bug in this API allowed access to private Profile fields of users to the Google+ apps.

Google said: 'We found no evidence that any developer was aware of this bug, or abusing the API, and we found no evidence that any Profile data was misused'.

Some of that qualifies as legally protected personally identifiable information, and its exposure could trigger scrutiny from federal and state regulators, including some who have probed Google before on similar issues. Google says it fixed the issue as soon as it was discovered, but the bad part of this all is that Google opted not to disclose the breach to users, instead sweeping the situation under the rug, hoping nobody would notice. Why did Google hide the security vulnerability? .

Google has finally closed its social network Google+ after announcing data from up to 500,000 users may have been exposed by a bug that was present for more than two years. Compared to other social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, Google+ has one of the lowest usage and engagement, with 90% of its users accessing the service for less than 5 seconds. However, what wasn't known, was that on the given accounts, friends of that profile also had their data made available to developers, even if they made such data private.
