Rocket Launch Failure Forces Astronaut And Cosmonaut To Make 'Ballistic Landing'

International Space Station crew members board the Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft for the launch at the Baikonur Cosmodrome Kazakhstan American, Russian alive after Soyuz rocket headed to space station fails on launch

Two astronauts from the US and Russia were safe after an emergency landing Thursday in the steppes of Kazakhstan following the failure of a Russian booster rocket carrying them to the International Space Station.

NASA said that rescue teams have reached Nick Hague and Roscosmos' Alexei Ovchinin and they have been taken out of the capsule and were in good condition.

Search and rescue teams were immediately scrambled to recover the crew, and paratroopers were dropped from a plane to reach the site quickly.

NASA and Roscosmos officials say they are launching an investigation into exactly what went wrong with the rocket and why.

Dmitry Rogozin, a firebrand nationalist politician who this year was appointed by President Vladimir Putin to head Roscosmos, said on Twitter he had ordered a state commission to probe the accident.

The next Soyuz launch for the ISS was scheduled for Dec.r 20, and it is supposed to take a new three-person crew to the Space Station. "Instead they'll be taking a sharp landing, coming back to Earth".

The astronauts were to dock at the International Space Station six hours after the launch and join an American, a Russian and a German now aboard the station. This was Ovchinin's second trip to the station, and Hague's first trip.

It's obviously worth noting that the Soyuz rocket is a completely separate piece of hardware from the Soyuz crew capsule, and something like the hole found in the crew capsule now attached to the International Space Station couldn't possibly result in a failure of a rocket booster.

Any member of the public can file a misconduct claim against a judge on the circuit where he sits, she noted. The Denver-based 10th Circuit Court now handling the complaints is led by Chief Judge Timothy M.

The incident comes as the USA has been making progress in its quest to end Russia's monopoly on manned flights to the ISS by encouraging private companies to conduct launches.

Even the most seemingly routine rocket launch is never all that routine.

Russia's RIA news agency reported that Russian Federation has immediately suspended all manned space launches after the failure.

Russia's TASS news agency said the capsule carrying the two men separated from the troubled rocket safely. The crew, which was travelling to the International Space Station, is reportedly safe and in "good condition" after the scary failure was broadcast on the web.

It was to be the first space mission for Hague, who joined NASA's astronaut corps in 2013.

"A live broadcast of the launch showed the Russian-American crew experienced a sensation of weightlessness and spinning at booster separation, signaling a serious problem had occurred", Matthew Bodner told NPR's Newscast unit from Moscow.

These will be the first crewed missions to launch from American soil since 2011 and, while the issues with the Soyuz MS-10 mission will likely be resolved by then, this will allow for increased access to space and reduce dependency.

NASA had issued a worrying tweet on Thursday morning saying: 'There's been an issue with the booster from today's launch. The hole cause a small oxygen leak while hooked up to the ISS.
