Forecasters warned of heavy rain - up to four inches - and potential flooding in the wake of the storm.

In the Republic, where Storm Callum was set to first make landfall, a national emergency co-ordination group met yesterday for a briefing on the dangers posed by the intense weather system.

Areas in the south and south west could see between 50 to 100mm of rain by the end of Friday, with as much as 120 to 160mm likely over high, south-facing ground.

Passengers due to travel on Friday are being urged to check their flight status after Aer Lingus cancelled "a number" of flights due to the impending arrival of Storm Callum.

.

Much of the United Kingdom will experience some heavy rain on Friday, with further spells at times during Saturday, as Storm Callum passes to the northwest of the UK.

The latest updated weather warning includes a description of winds for the north-east of the country that say gusts will likely stay between 100 and 130km/h up until 4pm.

At this time of year the wind is also likely to cause more leaves to fall on the roads, which can block drains and increase localised surface flooding.

NRW will issue flood alerts and warnings if rivers reach trigger levels, with teams monitoring river levels 24 hours a day.

She forecast: "With Storm Callum approaching from the west, the weather is looking particularly wet and windy over the next couple of days for many of us".

Temperatures will begin to plummet on Sunday, as rain clears to the east for a mostly clear but cool afternoon, with some areas even experiencing a 10 degree drop in temperatures.

Where flooding may occur there is a chance of delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

SEPA said that high tides are expected to affect the area Argyll and Bute and Ayrshire and Arran and Skye and Lochaber in particular, due to "a storm surge and large waves" associated with the storm.

We will keep you up to date as the situation unfolds.
