Trump says Mattis may go: 'I think he's sort of a Democrat'

US Secretary of Defense James Mattis and US Vice President Mike Pence listen while US President Donald Trump speaks to the press before a meeting in the Pentag Trump "60 Minutes" interview: President suggests Defense Secretary James Mattis could be next to leave Cabinet

CBS billed the story as Trump "hinting" that Mattis may depart his role - a change that's been in the rumor mill for several months - but the president seemed to signal that the internal chaos that roiled the Trump administration in its infancy has settled somewhat, and called reports of internal strife within the ranks of the president's Cabinet are "fake news". He hasn't told me that.

He said that while he was satisfied with the performance of certain members of his administration, there are others "that I'm not thrilled with". "They'll come into the administration, they'll be phenomenal", Trump said.

While Bolton and Pompeo also have taken a hard line on Russia, Trump has often expressed a desire for better relations with Russia's President Vladimir Putin.

Whether he leaves or not, General Mattis today is far from the "Mad Dog" Mattis Trump proudly bragged about previously.

"Well, I don't know".

One factor thought to have darkened Mattis' prospects is this year's arrival in the White House of Mira Ricardel, who now has the powerful post of deputy national security adviser and is believed to dislike Mattis, current and former officials have told Reuters. I have some people that I'm not thrilled with.

"What about General Mattis, is he going to leave?"

Trump said that he has a "very good relationship" with Mattis and that the two had lunch together "two days ago", but the president added that "it could be that he is" leaving. "At some point, everybody leaves". We get along very well.

"Yeah, other people will go, sure", Trump said.

When pressed about consistent rumors that Mattis is close to submitting his resignation, Trump responded: "Well, I don't know".

Mattis has dismissed reports of his potential departure in the past. "People leave. That's Washington". U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley is the most recent high-level official to resign, announcing Tuesday she would leave the administration at the end of the year.

"It could be that he is [leaving the administration]", President Trump told CBS's "60 Minutes".
