Sri Lanka's former cricket captain Sanath Jayasuriya has been charged with two counts of breaching the International Cricket Council's (ICC) anti-corruption code, the sport's world governing body said.

The 49-year-old has also been charged with trying to hide, destroy or tamper with evidence that could be crucial to anti-corruption investigation.

Jayasuriya, who scored 21 centuries and took 323 wickets in 445 ODIs and also averaged 40.07 runs in 110 Test matches, says the charges "do not contain allegations pertaining to match fixing, pitch fixing or any other similar corrupt activity".

One of Sri Lanka's greatest cricketers, Jayasuriya was the player of the 1996 World Cup which is the country's first and only World Cup trophy.

Jayasuriya, who played 110 Tests, 445 one-day internationals and 31 Twenty20s in a 22-year worldwide career, has until 29 October to respond to the charges.

The ICC had released a statement earlier in the day, charging Jayasuriya on two counts: "Article 2.4.6 Failure or refusal, without compelling justification, to cooperate with any investigation carried out by the ACU, including failure to provide accurately and completely any information and/or documentation requested by the ACU as part of such investigation".

The Red Sox made the announcement Sunday night in the seventh inning of Game 2 of the AL Championship Series against Houston . As of Monday evening, Bregman's Instagram account no longer contained a post with video from Eovaldi's June start in Houston .

"I am under strict legal advice that no comment in respect of the charges as such a course would offend the ICC rules".

While Hussain lamented the fact that global cricket was brought into disrepute once again, he praised the ICC for its swift decision to charge Jayasuriya.

After a 22-year-long career that ended in 2011, Jayasuriya served on the Sri Lankan parliament and became the national team's chairman of selectors.

The ICC's ACU is acting further on their previous investigation which in January 2016 saw Galle stadium curator Jayananda Warnaweera banned for three years after he failed to cooperate with the ACU. They were laid following more than a year of ACU focus on Sri Lanka's 2017 ODI series against Zimbabwe.

The ICC did not specify the events that prompted its action against the celebrated cricketer, who is a World Cup victor and played 110 Tests and 445 ODIs.
