Khashoggi Investigation: Saudi threatens to retaliate against sanctions

White House warns of penalty over Saudi writer Saudi media: Any US sanctions over Khashoggi would ‘stab its own economy to death’

Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, said on Sunday it would retaliate against any punitive measures linked to the disappearance of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi with even "stronger ones". But in a subsequent tweet, the Saudi Embassy in Washington thanked countries including the United States for refraining from jumping to conclusions over the case.

Just last week, Trump vowed to uncover the truth about what happened to Khashoggi and promised "severe punishment" for those responsible.

Britain, France and Germany insisted Sunday that "light must be shed" on the whereabouts of journalist Jamal Khashoggi as they called for a credible investigation into his disappearance.

Investment in sport has proved a viable option for those two oil-rich gulf states looking to project soft power and improve the global prestige of their nations overseas and, it's claimed, Saudi Arabia are set to look to do the same.

The Saudi warnings came after the country's stock market fell as much as 7% on Sunday amid fears of sanctions.

Khashoggi, a well-known critic of Saudi Arabia's regime, disappeared after walking into the Saudi consulate on October 2.

Still, regional traders said speculation the Khashoggi case might deter some inflows of foreign investment - and that a backlash in the US Congress could lead to US sanctions against some Saudi individuals - had triggered panic selling of stocks by some local investors.

While expressing support for joint Saudi-Turkish efforts to look into his disappearance, they said the Saudi government must provide "a complete and detailed response", indicating that such a message had been conveyed "directly" to Riyadh.

Reportedly, the Turkish officials claim to be in possession of audio and video recordings of the journalist being interrogated, killed and then dismembered inside the consulate, however, no such recordings have been made public yet.

Trump concedes climate change is 'real' - but it will 'change back'
During Sunday's interview , Mr Trump cast doubt on making any changes, saying the scientists "have a very big political agenda". Trump: "When I say Obama did it, you don't want to talk about it". "I don't wanna be put at a disadvantage".

A pro-government Turkish daily published preliminary evidence last week from investigators it said identified a 15-member Saudi intelligence team which arrived in Istanbul on diplomatic passports hours before Khashoggi disappeared on October 2. "From where we sit, we don't see any demand for Saudi equities at all".

"By week's end, The New York Times and every other major Western news media organization, except Fox Business Network, had canceled its participation", the Times reported.

Turkish authorities repeatedly said that Khashoggi never left the consulate premises.

Already, global business leaders are pulling out of the kingdom's upcoming investment forum, a high-profile event known as "Davos in the Desert", and the sell-off on Riyadh's Tadawul stock exchange showed that investors are uneasy.

"There's something really bad and disgusting about that, if that was the case, so we're going to have to see", Mr Trump said.

"We were going to browse appliances for our new home and meet with our friends and family members over dinner", she wrote.

Cengiz added that she had seen reports President Trump wanted to invite her to the White House.

The kingdom's Government and people are "as glorious and steadfast as ever", it said.
