According to a team of french scientists who looked at the diets of almost 68,000 people for almost five years. They were questioned about 16 categories of foods - including fruits, vegetables, eggs and wine - and how often they ate organic versions of them.

"Although our findings need to be confirmed, promoting organic food consumption in the general population could be a promising preventive strategy against cancer", they concluded in their paper, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine. Those who ate the most organic food were 25% less likely to develop cancer.

Filling your diet with fruits and vegetables is known to reduce your risk of chronic disease and cancer, regardless of whether or not they're organic, Baudry and other experts said.

"Our findings revealed a negative association between high organic food scores and postmenopausal breast cancer, Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, and all lymphomas".

People should eat right and maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise to prevent cancer, Hu said.

The Organic Center, a research and education organization managed by the Organic Trade Association, said in a statement that the study was the first of its scale to find to find such clear support of organic foods. "That is because deciding to eat organic foods or not is a decision that has very strong social and economic determinants".

Researchers at the Sorbonne Paris Cité Epidemiology and Statistics Research Centre (INRA, Inserm, University Paris 13 and CNAM) conducted the epidemiological study. Specifically, they are 73 percent less likely to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma and 21 percent less likely to be diagnosed with post-menopause breast cancer. During this period a total of 1,340 cancers were detected among the participants and of these 459 were breast cancers, 180 were prostate cancers, 135 were skin cancers, 99 were colorectal cancers and 47 were non-Hodgkin lymphomas. Some researchers such as Dr. Jorge E. Chavarro from Department of Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health remains skeptical. The research included around 69,000 French adults-more than three-quarters of which were women in their 40s-and compared the consumption of organic products with cancer rates over the course of about four years.

The organic food questionnaire was also not validated, making it unclear what researchers were actually measuring.

The researchers noted that while the study does not prove an organic diet causes a reduction in cancers, it suggests that an organic-based diet could contribute to reducing cancer risk. Bean sprouts and soy are also good anti-cancer food. According to official data, more than 75% of the participants were females in their mid-forties.

Exposure to pesticides in fruits and vegetables are not only the possible culprits for cancer.
