Pence Won't Rule Out Nukes in Space

"At this time we don't see any need to amend the treaty, but as time goes forward, the hope that we could continue to see outer space as a domain where peace will reign will require military presence'".

In creating the Space Force that President Donald Trump wants, one of the first steps should be to make an agency that buys cutting-edge space technology for all branches of the USA military, the National Space Council said Tuesday.

The Trump administration in August announced an ambitious plan to usher in a new "Space Force" as the sixth branch of the military by 2020.

The National Space Council has also voted to send six strategic recommendations to the president's desk, laying out the administration's vision and a roadmap to establish the force.

Pence said the president will soon ask Congress to gather military and civilians working on space security into a unified command, similar to the military's special forces.

Wirtu, who had held the office for five years, departed one year ahead of his term ending, saying he wanted to be part of change and reforms.

This summer, Trump directed the Defense Department to begin the process of establishing a space-focused military service that would be a counterpart to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.

A lack of centralized leadership and accountability threatened US ability to "advance our national security in space", Pence said.

Pence further said that the question of nuclear weapons is "the president's determination", and that while it's in the interest of every nation to keep nukes out of space for now, at some point this may prove to be an way to show more "strength". The administration believes, he said, the establishment of the Space Force is "central to the solution that America needs".

According to the Vice President around 60,000 people are now working on space security in the United States, across various branches of the military and intelligence services.

"In the first phase (space forces) will look like the other, already existing types of Armed Forces". It also calls for $10 million a year for five years starting in 2020 to fund the commerce arm. Such a change, which the Defense Department has estimated would cost $13 billon in the first five years, must first be approved by Congress.
