Facebook's revenue in the quarter rose 33% from the same quarter a year ago to $13.73 billion, missing Wall Street forecasts by $40 million. It dove sharply during Mr. Zuckerberg's remarks and then bounced higher just as quickly.

Monthly active users averaged 2.27 billion, an increase of 10 percent year-over-year although analysts excepted 2.29 billion.

Facebook announced the results as it strives to fend off concerns about how well it protects the data of users and defends against use of the site to spread misinformation aimed at swaying elections. Is Facebook killing us?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's goal to monetise WhatsApp has forced the social media messaging service's co-founders to leave the company.

Future revenue growth depends on Facebook's ability to shift marketers' interest to new ads in messaging services, and marketing spots embedded in a popular way of sharing called "stories", especially on Instagram.

After that, he said "I know that we need to make sure our costs and revenue are better matched over time". "We will never be ideal, but I'm proud of the work we've been doing here".

Facebook is also seeing a rapid rise in viewing videos, which also generate less ad money per minute than news feeds.

Facebook earlier this year warned that revenue growth rates would decline in the third and fourth quarters.

That dynamic was on display in Facebook's earnings report Tuesday, when the social network reported a slight revenue miss but stronger than expected profit for the July-September period.

In recent months, Facebook disclosed further misinformation campaigns by Russia, Iran, and domestic actors.

Mr Zuckerberg said that Facebook's problem is that users are gravitating toward features such as direct messaging and video viewing faster than it can find ways to place ads there while attracting clicks and not annoying users. "We will see all the good and bad humanity can do".

"Young users are deleting the app and all users are taking breaks from Facebook", said Natasha Lamb, managing partner at Arjuna Capital.

Facebook head of cybersecurity Nathaniel Gleicher details the company's efforts to ensure that public debate on the platform is authentic.

"This is a journey that's going to take years, not quarters", Wehner said in the call with investors. The social network has pledged to hire tens of thousands more people to monitor content on its platform, and said on Tuesday it planned to spend $US18 billion to $US20 billion in operating expenses next year.

Zuckerberg said Facebook is up against sophisticated adversaries who continue to evolve.
