A German nurse has admitted murdering 100 patients by giving them drug-induced heart attacks so he could bring them back to life.

So far, police have exhumed 130 bodies of patients who died under his care, and investigators say it may be impossible to ascertain the true death toll, as the bodies of some potential victims were cremated.

"They had everything they needed [to stop him] - you don't have to be Sherlock Holmes", Marbach, the grandson of one of the patients, said.

The prosecution told the state court in Oldenburg, Lower Saxony, that the nurse had acted...

In prior hearings, Hoegel is reportedly said to have been seeking a sense of euphoria after having resuscitated a patient from an emergency situation he himself created.

Marbach said the defendant seemed remarkably composed as he admitted to the extraordinary list of killings.

Hoegel is accused of carrying out the murders between February 2000 and June 2005 in hospitals in the cities of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst. Prisoners serving life sentences are usually considered for parole after 15 years.

Before taking the stand on Tuesday, Hoegel had only acknowledged around 30 murders, all of them committed in Delmenhorst.

"I didn't expect it to happen today".

Judge B├╝hrmann said that the goal of the trial was to bring to light the full extent of Hoegel's crimes that have not been formally acknowledged for years.

Asked by the judge why he didn't admit to the remaining murders before now, Hoegel said it was "out of shame" and because it took him a long time to face up to what he had done at the first hospital.

The court said in a statement that the number had gone up to 100.

Oldenburg police chief Johann Kuehme past year said other medical workers at Oldenburg were aware of an elevated number of resuscitations, and initial indications of possible wrongdoing by the nurse in Delmenhorst emerged as early as April 2003.

Prosecutors say an investigation and toxicology reports show he injected 35 people at the clinic Oldenburg clinic and 62 in Delmenhorst.

Each time, the nurse followed a similar procedure; he would inject his patient with a medication triggering a cardiac arrest, which would follow an attempted resuscitation.

The death toll may be even higher than now assumed, because some victims - ages between 34 and 96 - were cremated.
