"At your request, I am submitting my resignation", Session wrote.

US Attorney-General Jeff Sessions has resigned as the country's chief law enforcement officer at President Donald Trump's request.

Sessions' removal is significant because, due to his recusal from the Russian Federation investigation, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has overseen Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

Sessions' job security has always been in question. But he and Mr. Trump have clashed, particularly after it was revealed Mr. Rosenstein talked about secretly recording the president or having him declared incapacitated. Mueller will now answer to Whitaker, who will oversee the investigation.

Whitaker has been publicly critical of the Mueller investigation.

In a long-expected but still shocking move, President Trump fired Attorney General Jeff Sessions just hours after the 2018 midterm elections. "I don't have an attorney-general", he said in September.

Sessions has been an adversary of Trump's since March 2017 when he rescued himself from the Russian Federation probe. "Sessions allowed the Department of Justice to function as the political arm of the Trump administration to undo fundamental rights that protect each of us, disregarding years of legal precedent and settled law".

At a forum for Republican candidates for Sente in 2004, Whitaker said that he would ask judicial nominees whether they were "people of faith" in the nomination process. "But number two our paramount view is that any attorney general, whether this one or another one should be able to interfere in the Mueller investigation in any way".

In August he took to Twitter to declare: "This is a awful situation and Attorney General Jeff Sessions should stop this Rigged Witch Hunt right now, before it continues to stain our country any further". He had often been the subject of Trump's anger after recusing himself from the federal investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

Rosenstein has opposed firing Mueller, to Trump's chagrin.
