The condition of The CliffsofMoher, which was being ridden by star English jockey Ryan Moore, is not yet known.

The stallion was euthanized after fracturing his right shoulder during the first 600 metres of the 2018 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse on November 6, Australia's ABC news reported.

The Cliffsofmoher's jockey Moore, considered the world's best, was emotional after the race as Williams' tilt at a seventh Melbourne Cup turned into a nightmare.

Racing Victoria, the governing body in Australia's southern state, said The Cliffsofmoher "was unable to be saved due to the nature of the injury sustained".

Before the race, The Cliffsofmoher was "sweating up", which can sometimes be an indication a horse is in distress.

He first tried to win the Melbourne Cup back in 1988, and through the Godolphin royal blue colours since 1998.

Channel 7 commentator Bruce McAvaney said it was a "tragedy" while his colleague Richard Freedman had made a point of mentioning how agitated The Cliffsofmoher looked before the race.

The Flemington track was lashed with up to 50mm of rain on the morning of the Melbourne Cup, but was the subject of two track upgrades later in the day as the sun broke through intermittently.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy salutes as he brings back Cross Counter to the birdcage after winning the Melbourne Cup.

The horse was the sixth to die as a result of the Melbourne Cup since 2013. In 2015, fan-favorite Red Cadeaux suffered a serious injury during the Cup, and wound up having to be put down 2 1/2 weeks later. The horse was euthanised after the race at Flemington.

Admire Rakti was a Japanese racehorse who collapsed and died from cardiac arrest at the Melbourne Cup in 2014. Araldo was put down several hours after the race after he fractured his leg when he kicked a fence.

Last year, Regal Monarch fell in race four on Melbourne Cup day.

"Unfortunately these things can happen galloping around the fields at home and it's very sad", O'Brien said.

Winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy was also fined $3,000 for using his whip nine times before the last 100m.
