Bernie Sanders says midterms prove progressive can win the White House

US: Democrats win House, Republicans keep Senate US: Democrats take the House, but there was no landslide – Nordea Markets

Republicans in this midterm benefited from having only nine seats up for grabs in the senate, compared to 26 for Democrats and the Independents who caucus with them.

The Democratic sweep should end an era of highly charged partisan discord that was dominated by outgoing Republican Gov. Paul LePage and his prolific use of the veto.

President Trump says House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi "has earned the great honor" of being Speaker of the House.

Control of the committees - where the three lawmakers are now the highest-ranking Democrats - will hand them the unilateral power to issue subpoenas if they wish, as well as to demand documents and testimony from White House officials and important figures in Trump's campaign team and businesses. With control of the legislative apparatus in the House, they will also have more money and staff for investigations.

Republicans, though, pointed to Trump's 8-point victory in OH in 2016, and the four campaign visits he made to the state, including a southwest OH jaunt three weeks before the election.

They could now launch investigations into Mr Trump's administration and business affairs, from tax returns to potential conflicts of interest.

Some Democrats have also called for starting impeachment hearings against Trump, but mostly appear willing to wait to see what information Mueller produces from his 18-month investigation. He was quick to distance himself from losing GOP House members who had been critical of his heated rhetoric, citing Florida Rep. Carlos Curbelo and Colorado Rep. Mike Coffman, among others.

Trump had worked hard to ensure neither chamber fell to the Democrats, holding a campaigning blitz in the run-up to Tuesday's polls that saw him traverse the continental U.S.

Republicans have sought to capitalize on Pelosi's low favorability numbers for several campaign cycles. But he said Democrats were able to win when they focused on "bread-and-butter economic issues", the way he and Sen. In elections for Congress, governorships and state legislatures alike, the number of women who ran outstripped previous years, as did the number of women nominated.

Voters in MS are due to return to the polls later this month for a run-off. According to data compiled by The Associated Press, 237 women ran for the House as major-party candidates and 100 women will be sworn in come January 2019.

A total of 420 out of 435 seats have been declared, and 223 of these have been won by Democrats. They also attracted a higher proportion of younger voters than at the last midterm elections four years ago and their new lawmakers will make the House younger, more female and more diverse.

The Republican side of the aisle elected mostly white men.

Trump promised middle class tax cuts in the days before the election. He predicted an "invasion" from the migrant caravan making its way toward the US and decried the "radical" agenda of speaker-in-waiting Pelosi.

Said Warren: "This resistance began with women and it is being led by women tonight". In Florida, more than eight million voters cast ballots: up from six million in 2014.

In the Miami area, former Clinton administration Cabinet member Donna Shalala won an open seat, while GOP Rep. Carlos Curbelo lost his bid for a third term in a nearby district. Like other Democrats across the country, Spanberger emphasized protecting people with pre-existing conditions from being denied coverage or charged more by insurers.

Trump dissected the elections in a combative White House news conference that stretched to almost 90 minutes as he put a defiantly glossy sheen on the mixed midterm results and stressed his party's victories in the Senate. If they do so, it will signal a "war-like posture", Trump said.

Gains in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania were offset by mixed results in OH and GOP dominance in electoral powerhouse Florida.

Also unresolved are Georgia's 6th district, Maine's 2nd district, Minnesota's 1st district, New Jersey's 3rd district, North Carolina 9th district, Utah's 4th district and Washington's 8th district.

Yesterday, voters in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania backed Democratic candidates for both governor and the Senate.

Democrats had strong nights in both the Midwest/Rustbelt region and in the Southwest part of the USA, the regions of the country which will decide the 2020 presidential election.
