The Associated Press reported that a record 237 women ran for the House of Representatives this year.

This makes Ocasio-Cortez, who turned 29 last month, the youngest person ever elected to congress.

Jahana Hayes is the first black woman elected to represent CT in Congress. Hayes, the 2016 National Teacher of the Year, will be serving Connecticut's 5th Congressional District, which includes areas in the northwestern part of the state.

Progressive challenger Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is joined by New York gubenatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon at her victory party in the Bronx after upsetting incumbent Democratic Representative Joseph Crowley on June 26, 2018 in New York City.

Pappas and Davids are part of this year's Rainbow wave that saw a record amount of LGBT candidates (244, according to the New York Times) run for office.

Regardless of who wins in Arizona's competitive Senate race, the state will elect either Republican Martha McSally or Democrat Kyrsten Sinema as the state's first woman to serve in the chamber.

Overall, the number of Republican women serving in Congress next term will slightly dip, partially because some female incumbents and candidates lost.

Omar, a Somali-American was once a refugee, while Tlaib is the first Pakistani-American woman in congress.

O'Rourke noted that women favored Democratic candidates in congressional matchups by 19 points. Polis was also the first openly gay man elected to Congress in 2008. White women with college degrees voted strongly for Democrats, by 22 points.

Democrat women flipped MI and Kansas, defeating male Republican incumbents.

Of the women challenging for a new seat, one-third were successful.

In the days leading up to the election, Trump said his sharp focus on immigrant caravans moving north toward the U.S. -Mexico border, and the threats he contends they pose, would appeal to women.
