Police responded Friday morning to reports of an active shooter at Topsail High School in eastern North Carolina, but officials later determined a faulty water heater was to blame for the scare, according to local reports.
No injuries were reported and there is no evidence of an active shooter.
Pender County Sheriff's Department could not give details of the shooting on Friday morning but a spokesman told DailyMail.com it was an active scene. It was reported a piece of equipment had been malfunctioning over recent days which made a sound like gun fire.
Topsail High, Topsail Middle, and Topsail Elementary remain on lockdown.
All of the schools in the district have been placed in lock down.
