Protesters call for Mueller investigation to continue

Fears for Russia probe as Trump fires Jeff Sessions Whitaker was campaign chairman for Mueller witness

Trump announced via Twitter that Sessions' chief of staff Matthew Whitaker will be acting attorney general.

Why is anyone surprised that he's now done what he said he was going to do?

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions was sacked by Donald Trump Wednesday after enduring more than a year of bitter criticism from the president over his decision to step aside from the Russian Federation investigation that has dogged the White House.

The rally in Champaign was one of more than 900 protests against Trump's actions across the U.S. They were supported by both Indivisible and MoveOn, another progressive advocacy group frequently critical of the president and the Republican Party.

A couple dozen students and community members gathered at 5 p.m. Thursday night at the Circle on campus as part of a nationwide day of protests to protect Robert Mueller, special counsel of the Trump-Russia investigation.

"Donald Trump just crossed a red line, violating the independence of the investigation pursuing criminal charges in the Trump-Russia scandal and cover-up", the Facebook page wrote.

Thousands gathered in NY last night in support of Mueller amid fears Trump may try to scrap the probe into allegations of election meddling and collusion by his campaign and Russian Federation.

Critics worry Whitaker may be unlikely or unwilling to defend the investigation, given his history of partisanship and loyalty to Trump.

"I think this will be a very interim AG", McConnell said. Mr Whitaker has replaced replaced Jeff Sessions who was forced out by Mr Trump earlier this week.

But there has also been speculation Trump could try to kill or suppress the 18 month-old probe, pressing his view that Mueller leads a team staffed by Democrats operating under an illegal mandate.

In any of those instances, a House investigation against the president could ensue with or without Mueller's report.

In theory, Whitaker could order Mueller to limit the scope of his investigation or end it altogether.

New York City Rep. Jerrold Nadler - who is now the ranking Democratic member of the House Judiciary Committee and could be the next chairman of the committee with Democrats taking control of the U.S. House of Representatives - questioned the president's move on Twitter and said that "we will be holding people accountable".

To this point, Trump has heeded advice not to directly interfere, though a new chapter in the relationship with the probe may have begun with the appointment of Matthew Whitaker as new acting attorney general.

McGahn was drawn to Whitaker because he had a stalwart reputation in right-wing legal circles and because the White House wanted someone who was competent, could mind Sessions and could "keep things on the rails" at the Justice Department. He added that Whitaker was a "sounding board" for him when Clovis worked for Trump's campaign.
