A large crowd marched to downtown Seattle on Thursday evening to call for protecting special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign.

Both Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer and the expected House majority leader, Nancy Pelosi, want Whitaker to recuse himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation.

Crowds also turned out in Chicago; Greensboro, N.C.; Chattanooga, Tenn., and many other places.

Those opinions have led some leading Democrats, as well as protesters in several cities tonight, to call Whitaker to recuse himself and to protect Robert Mueller.

President Donald Trump's pick for acting attorney general, Matt Whitaker, is a close friend of Trump's 2016 election campaign co-chair, and a former government ethics chief said the friendship makes Whitaker unable to oversee impartially a politically charged investigation into the campaign.

To this point, Trump has heeded advice not to directly interfere, though a new chapter in the relationship with the probe may have begun with the appointment of Matthew Whitaker as new acting attorney general. He called Trump's recent actions "a rerun of the 'Saturday Night Massacre, ' " a reference to the October 20, 1973 resignations of the attorney general and deputy attorney general after each refused an order by President Richard Nixon to fire Watergate special prosecutor Archibald Cox.

Few if any House Democrats were publicly using the "I" word after the Republicans' devastating political losses in what the Founding Fathers called "the people's house". Their chants said "Hey hey, ho ho, Whitaker has got to go", or "This is what democracy looks like".

In a column he wrote in August 2017, Whitaker said that Mueller had "come up to a red line in the Russian Federation 2016 election-meddling investigation that he is dangerously close to crossing".

"What I've been saying for months is every president deserves an attorney general they have confidence in and they can work with", he said. A similar protest in Portland was attended by more than 300 people.

He said that in the Old Dominion, Democrats and some Republicans agreed that Trump appears "untethered" - appearing to allude to why Sen.

A former USA attorney and conservative commentator, Whitaker past year wrote an opinion piece for CNN arguing that Mueller would be going too far if he investigated the Trump family's finances.

Whitaker publicly criticized Mueller's investigation before he was hired as Sessions' chief of staff previous year.

Definitely what an innocent president who isn't obstructing justice would say in that situation.

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

Whitaker has already come under fire for deeply critical views of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe that he'd made in the past. Mueller's direct spending during that period was about $4.5 million.

"Congress must now investigate the real reason for this termination, confirm that..."

Mueller's team is paid for under a permanent fund for investigations by independent counsels that was established in 1998, which means it's not subject to Congress's routine spending debates.
