BHP Billiton has suspended all iron ore rail operations in Western Australia after a runaway freight train with no one on board travelled 92km before it had to be deliberately derailed.

Analysts expect BHP to be able to claw back any shipment delays and the impact to operations to be insignificant.

The MySteel 62% Australian fines iron ore price has been stronger-than-expected in recent weeks at above US$70 per tonne, rising above $77/t late last month.

BHP will rely on stockpile reserves of iron ore at Port Headland to maintain its port operations.

"I don't think any disruption would matter as demand is now focused on low-grade iron ore", said an iron ore trader in the city-state of Singapore.

A Perth remote control centre 1,500km away carried out the derailment at 5.30am.

The miner suspended all of its rail operations on Monday after it derailed the iron ore train, damaging 1.5 kilometres of track and crushing numerous 268 fully-laden wagons in the process.

Port Hedland is the world's largest iron ore exporting terminal, used by BHP as well as other miners.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the National Rail Safety Regulator had been informed and was investigating. It is expected to release a report in the second quarter of 2019.

BHP said around 1.5 kilometres of its privately-owned railway was destroyed, and expects it will take around a week to fix.

Footage aired by a local television station showed a wrecked locomotive beside a chain of upturned wagons in the country's Outback bushland.

BHP said recovering the train and fixing the track - a key access route for the enormous mining facility - will take around a week.

"We are working with the appropriate authorities to investigate the situation", a BHP spokeswoman said in a statement.

More than 130 workers have been deployed to fix the track and recover the wreckage, with BHP saying it would be removed "over the next few days".
