Tanzania: Why we detained Angela Quintal, Muthoki Mumo

Muthoki Detained SA journalists "returned to hotel"
Kenny Thornton | 09 November, 2018, 12:58

Former Mail & Guardian editor Angela Quintal is safe and is back at her hotel after being detained by Tanzanian authorities on Wednesday night, the Department of International Relations has confirmed. The entry permits forbid employment or business activities.

The Mail & Guardian said that according to Mabaya, there are a number of issues that the South African High Commissioner will want to be addressed by Tanzanian authorities.

The Department of global relations and cooperation says South African journalist Angela Quintal and a colleague returned to their hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in the early hours of this morning.

The crux of Tanzania's immigration department's defence was that the women on arrival in the country never informed immigration officials that they were there to carry out a journalism investigation and that prior to contacting local journalists they should have first contacted the authorities.

Confirming the journalists had safely left Tanzania, CPJ executive director Joel Simon in a statement urged the Tanzanian authorities "to halt their ongoing crackdown against a free press".

The pair, Angela Quintal - CPJ's Africa program coordinator, and Muthoki Mumo - its sub-Saharan Africa representative were detained in their hotel rooms in Dar es Salaam, Quintal said.

The incident occurred at 4:26am (local time) on 8 November in Hjeltefjorden, north of Sotra, Norwegian Armed Forces said. The frigate is believed to be the KNM Helge Ingstad , which took part in NATO's massive Trident Juncture 2018 wargames.

"It is deeply ironic that through their unjustified and abusive detention of our colleagues, Tanzanian authorities have made their work that much easier, " he said.

"After arresting them and educating them, we released them the same day..." "We call on the authorities to immediately release them and return their passports", he added.

Rights groups and media advocates have expressed concerns about the freedom of expression in the country.

There is confusion around whether or not well-known South African journalist Angela Quintal and her colleague have been released after appealing for help on social media, saying they had been taken for interrogation in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The CPJ journalists wanted to know what steps had been taken by the media in the search for Anzory, a journalist for Mwananchi Communications Limited who "disappeared" months ago.

The department announced on Thursday that Quintal and Mumo were released following their detention on Wednesday.
