At least 12 people were killed in a mass shooting at a bar in Southern California overnight after a gunman forced his way into the building, according to authorities.

The dead included 11 people inside the bar and a veteran sheriff's sergeant who was the first officer inside the door, Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean said. Helus was shot multiple times upon entering the bar and later died at a hospital. The gunman died inside the bar, police said. "Tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives, to save other people".

Dean said about 15 others had injuries considered non-life-threatening, including cuts that came from jumping out of a window or diving under a table, the sheriff said.

Students had gathered for college country night at Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks on Wednesday when shots rang out around 11 p.m.

The shooting at the Las Vegas country music festival on October 1, 2017 left 58 people dead and more than 500 injured.

Here's what we know of Long so far.

Ron Helus was among those killed, authorities said.

Numerous patrons were local students from nearby California Lutheran University, ages 19 to 25, attending "College Country Night".

The suspect, who has not been identified, was found dead inside the bar, Dean said.

The gunman was tall and wearing all black with a hood over his head and his face partly covered, witnesses told TV stations at the scene.

The Los Angeles Times quoted a law enforcement official as saying that at least 30 shots were fired inside the bar.

Kuredjian said hundreds of people were inside the bar and shots were still being fired when deputies arrived.

The sergeant, who served with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office for 29 years, has been described as a "hero".

Located around 40 miles west of Los Angeles, Thousand Oaks was recently ranked as one of the country's safest cities. A handgun was recovered at the scene, which Dean says has not been examined in detail yet. "It's still very fluid, and I hope to give you guys updates in terms of both the number and the status of the shooter".

Dean said that investigators were seeking a search warrant to look through Long's house, where he lived with his mother.

Holden Harrah told CNN the gunman opened fire within seconds.

The gunman has been revealed as 28-year-old veteran Long, who used a Glock 21.45-calibre handgun with an extended magazine to carry out the mass slaughter, according to officials.

In yet another unusual coincidence, one of the victims to be named in the Vegas shooting was Susan Smith from Simi Valley which is only miles from the site of the Borderline shooting. "Get out! Let's go!'" she added. "I dropped to the floor", she said.
