It was thought that they shared a liver.

A surgery to separate the conjoined twins Nima and Dawa will take place at the Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) in Melbourne, Australia today.

But Bhumchu Zangmo has been through 14 months of anxiety after her twin daughters, Nima and Dawa, were born joined together at the torso.

Head of paediatric surgery Dr Joe Crameri, who led the operation, said there had been no surprises despite fears the girls' bowel were shared.

Images shared by the Royal Children's Hospital show the girls lying on separate beds for the first time in their short lives. They shared a liver, but doctors started the procedure unsure if they also shared a bowel.

Bhutan is a poor Himalayan kingdom where doctors did not have the expertise to separate the girls, who were joined from the chest to the waist.

Dr Crameri said it was a "joy" to inform their mother, Bhumchu Zangmo, of the success - saying she had been "very grateful".

As well as the issues with mobility and comfort, Lodge said the twins had recently been losing weight, which had been a concern to doctors who are now observing them closely.

Dr Crameri congratulated the team and said the extraordinary amount or work and preparation put into the operation had "paid dividends".

But after driving into the trees on the 15th, the Englishman took six shots to reach the green and then three-putted for a nine. England's Ross Fisher blazed his way eight-under for the round but came unstuck on the par-four 15th where he carded a nine.

The operation has previously been postponed after last-minute checks revealed the sisters were not ready.

He said the next few hours would still remain critical to their recovery.

The twins have gained two kilograms since arriving.

During the operation, the twins' mother planned to wait at a Buddhist temple and pray.

She spent Friday praying and meditating.

On Thursday afternoon, the twins travelled to Melbourne from Kilmore, where they have been staying at the country retreat of the Children First Foundation.

"I feel quietly confident that we are going to find something we can deal with in a very straightforward manner, that's what I'm hoping", he said.

The Victorian state government pledged to cover surgical costs, with other funds raised to go towards the girls' Australian rehabilitation and return home to Bhutan.
