The Washington crews will travel to Chico, California to battle the Camp Fire. The flames descended on the mountain community so fast that many people were forced to abandon their vehicles and run for their lives down the sole road through the mountain town. Entire neighbourhoods were levelled and the business district was destroyed by a blaze that threatened to explode again with the same fury that largely incinerated the foothill town.

Officials said the fire has destroyed 6,453 homes and another 260 commercial structures and has grown to 404 square kilometers.

In northern California, sheriff's investigators have begun the agonizing task of scouring the wreckage of the most destructive fire in state records, in search of remains of the dead. The Woolsey and Hill fires have forced thousands of evacuations in the Los Angeles area.

US President Donald Trump said that the ongoing wildfires in the western state of California had caused a "catastrophic damage" adding that 52,000 people have been already evacuated over the disaster.

As of Saturday night, the Camp Fire had blackened more than 100,000 acres (40,500 hectares) at the edge of the Plumas National Forest.

The Camp Fire has reached 25 percent containment as high winds push it toward Lake Oroville, according to Cal Fire.

Gusts of up to 15 miles per hour are possible in and around towns such as Chico and Oroville Sunday morning, but Baruffaldi said the winds should calm by the afternoon.

Officials say the state of California has never seen anything like it.

Los Angeles County sheriff's chief John Benedict said two bodies were found in the fire zone of a Southern California blaze, the first fatalities from fires blazing north and west of downtown Los Angeles.

Tens of thousands of people fled the Camp Fire, some clutching babies and pets as they abandoned vehicles and evacuated on foot.

"The magnitude of destruction we have seen is really unbelievable and heartbreaking, and our hearts go to everybody who has been affected by this", said Mark Ghilarducci, the director of the California Office of Emergency Services.

Three were still in their pens when the adjacent barn caught fire, and Tricia Fultz just had to open the pens, burning her hands and hoping for the best.

One resident said Saturday morning he returned to the area to check on a property that he manages.

He said the two arrests were made in separate incidents and warned, "If you come here with the intent of taking advantage of the situation, we will arrest you and you will go to jail".

"The fire burned from one house, to the next house, to the next house until they were pretty much all gone", Knuthson said. He worked so long in the flames and smoke that he needed to use oxygen Thursday night at his home, but he refused to leave.

President Trump also took to Twitter to write: "There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor". But the fires are more likely the result of climate change and overpopulation. Still, her death has been hard on her 84-year-old father, Robert, who also may have lost his home, she said. A third fire, the Hill Fire, is torching parts of the Santa Rosa Valley, not far from the town where 12 people were killed in a shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill this week.
