World leaders in Paris mark 100th anniversary of WW1 Armistice

French President Emmanuel Macron warned against the dangers of nationalism in a speech aimed directly at the rising tide of populism in the United States and Europe.

World leaders with the power to make war but a duty to preserve the peace gathered by the dozens Sunday to mark the end of World War I's slaughter 100 years ago, turning Paris into the epicenter of global commemorations that drove home a powerful message: never again. And once inside, the French President touched Donald Trump's leg multiple times in an awkward attempt to justify his call for a European Army criticised and taken as an "insult" by the American leader.

At the meeting with the French leader on Saturday, Trump said that Macron "understands that the United States can only do so much", adding that the USA was not disengaging and was trying to help.

His only bilateral meeting is with French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday, where issues like Syria, Iran, and trade could come up. "We must reaffirm before our peoples our true and huge responsibility".

"I would say I'm a patriot", he said, but added: "I'm not a believer in a sort of globalism without any differentiation". And I appreciate what you're saying about burden sharing'.

They greeted each other with tight smiles at the Élysée Palace after Mr. Trump ruffling feathers upon arrival Friday in France by tweeting that it was very insulting that Mr. Macron said Europe needed stronger military defense against "China, Russia and even the United States".

'I do share President Trump's views that we need a much better burden sharing within North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, and that's why I do believe that my proposals for European defense are totally consistent with that, because it means more Europe within North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, more capacity, in order to take our part of the burden.

Meeting Mr Macron at the presidential palace in Paris, Mr Trump said the U.S. wanted "a strong Europe", but the defence bill "has been largely on the United States". We want to be a part of it.

Macron said that the moral values of France helped them fight for the future of their country. "And, frankly, I think behind closed doors Macron fully appreciates the limits of what France an as individual nation can do".

He explained that the USA would like to assist Europe with its security obligations, so long as the costs are reasonably distributed, and that's why he's pushed so aggressively for America's allies to increase their contributions to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The cost of securing Europe is a reliable bête noire for Trump, one he's railed against on the campaign trail and in meetings with his counterparts.

Trump's talks with Macron at the Elysee are likely to cover European concerns about Trump's plans to withdraw the United States from the 1980s Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Agreement and U.S. renewal of sanctions against Iran.

"We had a regular discussion this morning and he confirmed in front of the press that he was ok", Macron told CNN. "I want to build a real security dialogue with Russian Federation, which is a country I respect, a European country - but we must have a Europe that can defend itself on its own without relying only on the United States".

Trump did not extend a handshake to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who the president described as "very dishonest and weak" following a disagreement during the G7 summit earlier this year, reports Agency France-Presse.

Trump has recently brushed off criticism over identifying himself as a "nationalist", arguing that it's merely him advocating for putting "America first" in the actions he takes as president.

"Nationalism is the exact opposite of patriotism", Macron said.
