Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Faisal later issued a formal statement giving further details.

The ministry also said Mr Trump emphasised Pakistan and Washington "should explore opportunities to work together and renew their partnership".

In the letter, Trump said a settlement is "his most important regional priority", the Pakistani foreign ministry stated. Pakistan reiterates its commitment to play a facilitation role in good faith. "Peace and stability in Afghanistan remains a shared responsibility", President Trump was informed.

The letter, confirmed by the National Security Council and the State Department, requests Khan's "full support for the US effort to advance the Afghan peace process", according to a State Department spokesperson. "He has asked for Pakistan's cooperation to bring the Taliban into talks", Chaudhry told Reuters.

The troubled relationship between Pakistan and the USA hit yet another bump last month after Trump declared he had cancelled assistance worth hundreds of millions of dollars because Islamabad does not do "a damn thing" for the US.

The U.S. president wants to bring to a close the 17-year-old conflict between Afghan security forces and the Taliban, who are fighting to drive out worldwide forces and reestablish their version of strict Islamic law after their 2001 ouster.

United States officials have always been pushing Pakistan to lean on the Taliban leadership, which Washington says is based in the country, to bring them to the negotiating table.

"We're looking for every responsible nation to support peace in the sub-continent and across this war in Afghanistan that's gone on now for 40 years", he told reporters at the Pentagon on Monday as he welcomed Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for talks.

US special envoy for Afghanistan peace, Zalmay Khalilzad, is due to arrive in Islamabad this week to further his mission of encouraging the insurgents to engage in an intra-Afghan peace dialogue to find a negotiating end to the conflict that has also caused record civilian casualties this year.

The prime minister, according to Geo News, also said that the "Kartarpur initiative was not a googly; it was a honest effort".
