The six-inch-wide blood clot that was coughed up by an unnamed patient in the near-perfect shape of his right bronchial tree.
Georg Wieselthaler, a transplant and pulmonary surgeon at the University of California at San Francisco, was in charge of the man's care, and hooked the patient up to a pump to assist blood flow throughout his body, while also providing a course of anticoagulants to help keep the man alive.
The doctors treating the patient were "astonished" after they unfurled the clot to find it had retained the shape of the lung pathway from which it came.
In other words, the man was rushed to hospital with chronic heart failure and to help his heart, doctors at the University of California - where the man was admitted - connected him to a machine created to maximise blood flow around the body.
The pulmonary surgeon Dr Georg Wieselthaler told The Atlantic when he carefully spread out the clot, realising it was the ideal shape, he was "astonished".
"During an extreme bout of coughing, the patient spontaneously expectorated an intact cast of the right bronchial tree", the journal explained. While people may cough out blood due to certain medical conditions, at times it can get even worse.

Doctors were surprised by the blood clot cast.
The 36-year-old had been admitted to hospital with heart failure, but died during his first week of treatment.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of the medical team, the man died a week after coughing up the bronchial tube cast.
