Referee denies Tyson Fury count against Deontay Wilder was slow

Wilder sees missed opportunity in first viewing of Fury draw Referee Reiss rejects Fury long-count claims

Boxing referee Jack Reiss has explained Tyson Fury's wonderful 12th round resurrection after being knocked down by Deontay Wilder.

Speaking to SiriusXM Boxing, he added: "The fight was so close, the magnitude of the fight - you know, a heavyweight championship fight - I've always been taught to count a champion out and I wanted to give him every opportunity".

It is unclear if the rematch will be in America or the United Kingdom, but Wilder has already suggested Las Vegas as the flawless location.

Given the outcome of this fight, it seems more than likely that the pair meet again sometime in the New Year - although the allure of a fight with Anthony Joshua for either man could delay these rematch plans. "That's enough right there to get you excited", he said.

"AJ's first choice is Wilder because when you're collecting belts, which he is, he wants to be the unified champ".

And Wilder doesn't mind even if it's a trilogy. "Jack I'm okay" or whatever he said.

"Of course [I feel a sense of injustice about the verdict] but I'm not going to go on about it forever, life goes on", Fury said to BT Sport ahead of Manchester United's fixture against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

"Frank Warren said [the second fight should be at] Arsenal".

The Briton looked to have no hope of getting to his feet but unbelievably rose off the canvas, to the astonishment of Wilder and the Staples Center crowd, to survive the count and hang on until the end. Fury, in a second dance, will be more a more enhanced, fitter, slicker, quicker, sharper and wiser opponent.

Veteran boxing promoter Barry Hearn who backed Joshua's statement told Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast that, "I've been hearing a lot of things that simply aren't true".

"He rolled over and got up and said "I'm okay!"

While Saturday's fight was ruled by a draw, Wilder said the sport of boxing, particularly in the USA was a victor. Fury makes claim to be the heavyweight - in a celebrated lineage including Joe Louis, Rocky Marciano, Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and Mike Tyson - from his victory over Wladimir Klitschko in November 2015.

"And to see that turnout, it was incredible".
